Kate Summerscale – Year of election 2010

Kate Summerscale, an author and journalist, has made a huge impression with her two published works of non-fiction.  The Queen of Whale Cay, the biography of Joe Carstairs, adventurer, speed boat ace, colonist and lesbian, revealed one of the twentieth century’s most colourful characters and won a 1998 Somerset Maugham Award and the Whitbread Award for Biography.  The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, a compelling combination of murder mystery and historical revelation, won the Samuel Johnson Prize for non-fiction in 2008.
