
Robert Macfarlane’s first book, Mountains of the Mind (2003), a history of ‘why people went to mountains’, won the Guardian First Book Award, the Somerset Maugham Award, and the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. The Wild Places (2007) took the Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature and the Scottish Arts Council Non-Fiction Book of the Year Award. When not ‘nature writing’, Macfarlane teaches English at Cambridge.
