Education

The Royal Society of Literature will shortly launch an outreach programme in collaboration with the charity First Story. First Story arranges for distinguished authors to work over an academic year running creative writing workshops for students in challenging* secondary schools across the country.  From 2012 a number of Royal Society of Literature Fellows will visit schools in which First Story is already working to give one off masterclasses. We hope in this way to give them confidence, enjoyment, and a desire to explore writing – both their own and other people’s – beyond the narrow confines of the GCSE and A-Level syllabuses.

In addition to the outreach programme, The Royal Society of Literature is also developing school membership which will ensure that our events are accessible and affordable for teachers and their pupils.

*‘Challenging’ refers to schools in which more than 50 per cent of pupils are considered deprived according to the Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) or in which GCSE results fall in the lowest third of the national distribution.
