Born in Ottawa in 1939, and author of more than 50 books, Margaret Atwood is, with Brian Friel and Alice Munro, the newest of the Royal Society of Literature's ten Companions of Literature. Established in 1961, this is the highest honour in the Society's gift, and its recipients have included Evelyn Waugh, Samuel Beckett, Iris Murdoch and Muriel Spark. After Colin Thubron has presented her with her Companion's scroll, she talks to Peter Kemp, Chief Fiction Reviewer of The Sunday Times, about the experiences and influences that have helped to shape her imagination, the themes that run through her work, the concerns most pressing to her, and the practicalities of her writing life.
